Declaring that the classical music scene “needs a transfusion of creativity,” composer Robert Farrell has released his debut CD Metaphysical Ignition, featuring compositions performed on a digital piano. The CD unites Baroque richness, Classical clarity and Romantic intensity.
Metaphysical Ignition represents “the spark of creativity—it’s about being alive.” The CD is available at several Tower Records in New York and New Jersey, as well at Musicmint.com. This award-winning website features free audio samples of the CD, and quotes by the composer.
Farrell, a self-taught composer and musician, chose the digital piano for its powerful sound and remarkable clarity. Necessity became the mother of invention when Farrell’s acoustic piano-needs became too large for his Kew Gardens studio. “A piano the size of a 9-foot Steinway requires huge studio space to sound its best,” explains Farrell. “It was a stroke of fortune that my studio was not large enough, and that I had to explore new possibilities.”
Farrell grew up immersed in the New York music scene. “It was when listening to Beethoven’s 9th Symphony that I realized this music reflected my innermost nature,” he remembers.
The CD is a compilation of a decade of composition for Farrell and its most recent song was written only a month before Farrell entered the studio to record. The CD is divided into four piano suites; in C minor, C major, B minor and E minor. The movements range from intimate Postludes, to romantic Ballades, majestic Preludes, and delightful Fantasies. All show a compelling mix of logic and magic, as each of the 16 movements has a unique story to tell.
